Abstract     Background. There are data which indicate that morbidity as well as mortality of certain types of cancer in Pomurje are among the highest in Slovenia. Therefore we carried out a detailed analysis of cancer mortality rates in Pomurje and Pomurje communes in the period 1985-90, and compared them with the data for the rest of Slovenia. Methods. A retrospective study and some statistical mortality measures were used to present the differences between Pomurje, Pomurje communes and Slovenia. The analysis was based on the data from death certificates and autopsy protocols of the regional Institute of Health Care in Murska Sobota, as well as on the mortality data for Slovenia collected at the Public Health Institute of Slovenia. Crude, age standardized and cumulative mortality rates were used for comparison. The Slovenian population on June 30, 1987 was taken as standard population. Results. In the observed period, a higher proportion of elderly can be noted in the population of Pomurje than in other parts of Slovenia. Crude mortality and sex specific mortality rates were increased as well; thus, the highest rates for males were found in the commune Murska Sobota and for females in the commune Lendava. On the other hand, regionally as well as in separate communes, the average proportion of all cancer deaths in the period under study appeared lower than the Slovenian average. Also, more males than females died of cancer in Pomurje, over a half of them in the age group 65 years or more. In the entire Republic of Slovenia 13.290 males and 10.552 females died of commune of Lendava. cancer during that period, 893 males and 675 females in Pomurje alone. Thus, while cancer victims represented 6.95 per cent of all cancer deaths in the Republic of Slovenia, Pomurje's population was only 6.63 per cent of the total Slovenian.(trunc.)
