Abstract		Progress in medicine and the improvement of basic preventive health measures have contributed to the increase in the number of the elderly in the developed countries. Consequently, the number of elderly drivers with all the illnesses and health problems of old age has also risen. Successful driving depends on the driver's skills and abilities, which is limited by the driver's sensory, motor and cognitive functions. The percentage of traffic accidents caused by the elderly is not very high. The number, ho we ver, also reffects the fact that the elderly do not participate in traffic as frequently as the younger population. Outeames of traffje accidents involving the elderly are usually very seriaus. All this indicates that their ability (despite their experience) to take part in today's traffic has decreased sometimes even to a point when they represent a threat to traffic safety.
