Abstract     The aim of our study was to examine the way of reacting to stressful situations in Slovene top athletes and its influence on the results in a major competition - the Beijing Olympic Games (OG). Our study population included the members of the Slovene Olympic team who participated in the 2008 Beijing OG. Fifty-six members out of a total of sixty-two were interviewed. A standardized survey questionnaire was used. The Tušak questionnaire (1) was used for social and demographic data and the athlete's expectations with respect to the result or success. The following questionnaires were also used: FPI 76 Questionnaire (2) for the assessment of personal qualities, CSAI - 2 Questionnaire (3) for assessing competitive anxiety, Coping Response Inventory questionnaire CRI-Adult (4), DRS Questionnaire (5) for the assessment of the stability of personality. The athlete's success in amajor competition was measured on the basis of the achieved result in the Beijing OG according to different criteria. Differences in psychological factors are determined according to the athlete's gender (anxiety and self-confidence). Several important factors which significantly contribute to top sports results in major competitions (cognitive anxiety, self-confidence and commitment) are defined by means of the analysis of psychological characteristics.
