Abstract | Functional voice disorder is the commonest cause of dysphonia as it leads to the development of vocal fold nod ul es. They develop because of voice misuse, overuse and/or abuse. An otorhinolaryngologist (a phoniatrician - if possible), a c1inical speech and language therapist, and a c1inical psychologist should be involved in the diagnostics of vocal fold nodules. All three professionals also cooperate during their treatment, but the speech and language therapist has the principal role. Surgical treatment is taken into consideration only when voice therapy has been unsuccessful. Preventive programs that are included in educational curriculums for occupations involving voice strain may decrease the incidence of voice problems among voice professionals. | |
