Abstract | Background: The surgical technique of bilateral split osteotomy (BSO) for correction of mandibular prognathism frequently results in sensory disturbances of the lower lip and the chin. Our aim was to evaluate the frequency and quality of sensory disturbances in this region one year after surgery. Subjects and methods: Fourteen patients who had undergone a BSO procedure for correction of mandibular prognathism at least one year previously compieted a questionnaire providing information on the presence and severity of sensory disturbance in the area of the chin and lower lip. In the patients and in 10 healthy subjects, two-point discrimination was assessed with the use of a pair of compasses, tactile sensation with von Frey hairs, and perception of non-painful and painful thermal stimuli with a Medoc TM system. Results: Appreciable sensory disturbances in the chin and lower jaw region were established in 35% of the patients. Our measurements showed impairment of tactile sensation, two-point discrimination and perception of non-painful and painful thermal stimuli. Conclusion: Sensory disturbance of the lower lip and chin is a frequent consequence of BSO. The procedure damages all types of sensory fibres, resulting in impairment of all sensory modalities. | |
