Abstract     Background. The authors eualuated the effectiveness of the training course of anaesthesiology given at the Medical faculty of Ljubjana during the present transitional period when the 6 year undergraduate training programme is being introduced. Methods. The study involved 831 students who attended the 5 year training programme for 2 years and the new programme for 3 years. The effectiveness of educational activities was determined on the basis of tests (resuscitation test and examinations), attendance at lectures, results of an open enquiry carried out by the Department of Surgery, interview about the content of clinic practice and analysis of the protocoled anaesthesiologic practicals. The extent of the implemented programme of clinic practice was determined by comparing the amount of practical work performed by the control group (54 randomly selected students, 1991/92) and by the study group (54 students with clinic practice according to the study protocol, 1992/93). Results. The average attendance rate (25.0, SD 12.0) at lectures of anaesthesiology was comparable to the attendance at lectures of surgical subjects. The average number of correct answers at resuscitation test was 84.81 out of 93 (SD 11.77, confidence interval 83.40-86.22). The results of the inquiry were found reliable (91.2 and 96.3 per cent of answers). The amount of skills learned during clinic practice was increasing and the amount of practical work performed in the study year 1992/93 was satisfactory. The study group repeatedly performed over 90 per cent of all planned anaesthetic procedures. Of the 154 applicants, 129 passed the examination at the first attempt. The presented curriculum is comparable with the curricula of university departments of anaesthesiology at several other medical schools. Conclusions. Attendance at lectures was not very good, which may be due either to teaching methods or study-schedule. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
