Abstract     Background. Asthma is characterised by inflammation of bronchial mucosa. The symptoms of asthma, bronchial hyperresponsiveness and circadian variability of obstruction are much dependent upon the intensity of bronchial inflammation. Conclusions. The etiopathogenesis of the inflammation of bronchial mucosa in the asthmatic patients is described. For the treatment of asthma, both the magnitude of circadian variability of obstruction and the degree of bronchial hyperresponsiveness must be evaluated. It is important to determine the allergic or nonspecific provoking factors of asthmatic attacks. The ways of long-term treatment of asthma as well as the acute exacerbations of asthma are presented.
