Abstract     Background. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cause of morbidity and mortality among malignant diseases in the developed countries which is the case for Slovenia, too. The data of Cancer registry of Slovenia referring to CRC have a delay of about five years. Also, there are not the exact data on particular parameters and eventual differences according to regions for this common and fatal disease. Methods. The retrospective study represents the state of CRC in the North Primorska region (NPR) in the period between 1987 and 1991. The study includes 197 patients. Results. The average incidence rate recorded for CRC is 36 for male 50, for female 27/100,000. The male to female ratio is 1.7:1. The most common location is rectum - 43 per cent. Predominant are the late stages of the disease according to Dukes: stage A - 2 per cent, stage B 36 per cent, stage C - 37 per cent, stage D - 25 per cent. The five-year survival rate (23 per cent ) was noted only with patients, who caught the disease in 1987, otherwise the three year survival rate is about 30 per cent. Conclusions. It has been stated that the incidence of CRC in NPR is above the average incidence in Slovenia. The incidence among male is not much lower than in countries with highest incidence of CRC. Late stages of the disease are predominant; the survival rate is a little lower in comparison with the results of other authors, more frequent occurence has been stated among male.
