Abstract     Background. The purpose of this work was to introduce a method for categorization of Slovene individuals at risk according to their ability to metabolize drugs and chemical carcinogens; this ability is highly correlated to susceptibility of individuals for chemical carcinogenesis in certain tissues. Methods. The polymorphism of CYPIID6 gene which is one of the genes responsible for metabolism of xenobiotics was studied by a genotyping technique, based on amplification of the corresponding part of genomic DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). DNA was isolated from the blood of 20 blood donors obtained from Blood Transfusion Centre of Slovenia. Results. In the analysed group of samples all possible variants of CYPIID6 gene (homozygous with/without mutations and heterozygous) coding for the enzyme which metabolizes several drugs and chemical carcinogens were detected. 16 out of 20 individuals were found as extensive and 4 as poor metabolizers of drugs. Conclusion. The newly introduced technique is suitable for the use in the medical studies aimed for the prevention of certain cancer diseases.
