Abstract     Background. The article focuses on those combinations that are of clinical use. Conclusions. Combinations of antimicrobial agents are commonly used, most often in immunocompromised and in intensive care unit patients. It seems likely, however that the combination therapy is employed more frequently than warranted. The most prominent reasons are to increase the antimicrobial spectrum, to treat polymicrobial infections, to enhance killing or inhibition (synergism), to reduce the potential for developing resistance and less commonly to decrease the dosage of potentially toxic antibiotics. However antibiotic combinations can result in antagonismus, increased side effects, costs and other undesirable effects.
