Abstract | Background: Tissue engineering is becoming an increasingly important field of regenerative medicine as it develops the biological substitutes for the purpose of restoring, maintaining or improving tissue function. Since the primary function of amniotic membrane is to surround and protect an embryo, the amniotic membrane's biological and mechanical properties categorize it as an attractive biomaterial for tissue engineering. Conclusions: We describe the properties of amniotic membrane, which has low immunogenicity, anti-microbial, anti-fibrotic, anti-scarring, as well as reasonable mechanical properties and epithelialization stimulating effects. The amniotic membrane is also a source of stem cells, which like the embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, but not tumorogenic. These various properties render the amniotic membrane a suitable source of cells or matrix for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. | |
