Abstract     Seven physicians measured the duration of first visit by patients aged 15 years and above in out-patient departments for general practice. Patients answered the questions concerning the duration of visit and its appropriate length. Median of the first visit was 7.4 minutes. Duration of visit was significantly longer in male physicians. Length of visit was increasing with the age of patients. 65.6 per cent of all the patients were of the opinion that the adequate length of visit would be 5 - 10 minutes. The number of those thinking that the adequate length of visit would be 5 - 10 minutes decreased with age, while the number of those voting for more than 10 minutes increased. 94.5 per cent of all patients were satisfied with the length of the visit. Patiets who visited female doctors were more satisfied. The satisfaction of patients was not proportional with the duration of the visit and did not differ between the sexes and among age groups of patients.
