Abstract     The aim of research is to prove that the general practitioner is already very early able to diagnose chronic non-infectious diseases in persons consuming alcoholic beverages as social drinkers or as already dependent on alcohol. A detailed anamnesis, thorough clinical examination, specific biochemical analyses and a thorough talk with relatives are necessary. 727 men and women were included in the research who at least once during the observed year sought medical help in out-patient department for general medicine, owing to diseases related to the consuming of alcoholic beverages. The research has been performed in the area of Ormož (Northeast Slovenia). There were 579 men and 148 women involved. Women were on the average 3 years elder than men and 53 per cent of them were unmarried, while only 25 per cent of men were also unmarried. Differences between sexes regarding age and marital status are statistically significant. 7,5 diseases amounted to 1 man among which the most frequent were alcohol addiction, gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory diseases and heart disorders. 6,7 diseases amounted to 1 woman, among them first of all urogenital diseases, depression, hepatal disorders, anemias, skin diseases and hypertension. Comparison of morbidity between alcoholics and non-alcoholics showed for the first group 7,5 diseases and for the second one 4,2. Statistically significant differences showed also the comparison between treated alcoholics with 2,8 diseases and social drinkers with 4,1 diseases on 1 person. Research has demonstrated that the consumption of alcohol affects vital organs already very soon. Well grounded measures are given, which take into consideration also the transition to a family doctor aiming at the improvement of the prevention of chronic non-infectious diseases related to the excesive consumption of alcohol.
