Abstract     Background: The article contains infromation about the occurence of cervical artery dissection, diagnostic methods and approach to treatment. A clinical case of a patient who became ill with a headache, right sided Horner's syndrome and a sense of numbness in the left hand. With proper neurological diagnosis, we found the right internal carotid artery dissection and cerebral infarction of the right hemisphere. When anticoagulant therapy was introduced the clinical condition normalized completely. Conclusion: The case is interesting because the internal carotid artery dissection, which may have resulted from an injury acquired while skiing or coughing during upper respiratory tract infection, caused not only local pain but also cerebral infarction and a sympathetic nerve lesion. Early recognition and treatment of the carotid artery dissection were important for the favourable outcome of the disease.
