Abstract     Monitoring of caries prevalence in three-year-olds over a period of 15 years has shown that preventive measures are not giving the expected results. The caries rate has failed to decline below 30 per cent, and bad habits are even on a slight increase. When first seeing a new patient, the dentist should have at his disposal diagnostic tests that would allow him to identify a child with increased susceptibility to dental caries. More attention should be devoted to bad habits and a healthy diet. A greater variety of toothbrushes and dentifrices should be made available for children.
