Abstract     This dissertation presents a newly formed protocol consisting of 10 tests, for evaluating the overall functional status of patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMD). Simple functional movements associated with the:1) head and neck, 2) upper limbs, 3) lower limbs, and 4) trunk are evaluated by 4 different tests. Another set of 3 tests deals with complex functional activities:1) locomotion, 2) general daily activities, and 3) intimate daily activities. Two tests evaluate vital functions: 1) respiration, and 2) general physical health. One test evaluates the degree of contractures. Comparison of the scores from each test reveals the most significant functional loss of each patient and indicates the most appropriate therapy. An average of all 10 test scores indicates the general functional status and this evaluation is the basis for placing each patient into an appropriate class of inability. The relation between the average scores for complex functional activities and for simple functional movements was called the quotient of adaptation-rehabilitation, and accounts for the relationship between disability and impairment, indicates required rehabilitation procedures and enables evaluation of these procedures. The test protocol was applied to 248 patients with different forms of NMD and was evaluated as valid, feasible, acceptable, sensitive, and reliable. The functional status of patients with different forms of NMD was evaluated along with the status of relevant rehabilitation programmes within our country. It was determined that wheelchair-bound patients with muscular dystrophy and spinal muscular atrophy are severely incapacitated with regard to general functional status and especially respiratory capacity, degree of contractures and scoliosis. Concerning the field of NMD, the rehabilitation profession in Slovenia is inadequate. Above all, the absence of systematic professional care of this group of patients is evident.
