Abstract | Background. Acquired cystic disease of the kidney is common in patients on maintenance haemodialysis and its major complication is possible malignant transformation. Balkan nephropathy is tubulointerstitial disease, leading to chronic renal failure. Association between Balkan nephropathy and transitional-cell carcinoma of the urinary tract is well known. Methods. The patient with chronic renal failure because of Balkan nephropathy treated with haemodialysis is described. Results. The intracystic solid lesion of the kidney (possible neoplasm) was found in this patient with acquired cystic disease of the kidney. Diagnostic procedure in suspected malignant transformation in acquired cystic disease of the kidney is presented. Conclusions. Review of publications about acquired cystic disease of the kidney with its complications and association between Balkan nephropathy and transitional-cell carcinoma of the urinary tract is presented. | |
