Abstract     Background. The percentage of population aged over 55 is constantly increasing, in Slovenia as well as in other parts of Europe. In that same age group there is an increasing incidence of serious changes in the oral cavity; the changes which potentially lead to fatal diseases if not discovered soon enough and treated properly. Some of them can lead to a cancer of the oral cavity, the incidence of which is increasing in Slovenia, more rapidly than that of any other cancer. Methods. The study was focused on 731 randomly selected Slovenians of both sexes aged over 55, and is apart of a multinational study coordinated by WHO Collaborative Center for Oral Disease Prevention in Erfurt. The WHO Oral Health Assessment Form 1986 was used at the examinaton. Statistical processing was done at the Institute of Biomedical Informatics at the Medical Faculty of Humboldt University in Berlin. Results. For the examined group of Slovenians aged over 55 it was determined that the incidence of changes in oral mucous membrane was increasing with the age of the participants (from 42.5 to 97.9 per cent). In 18.1 per cent of the examinees aged 65-74 years, white spots were discovered in the mouth, and for 17.9 per cent of the examinees aged over 74, tumorous exophytic changes were established. Non-specific stomatitis was discovered in 7.2 per cent of the cases and angulus infektiosus oris in 23.2 per cent. Conclusions. The results of the clinical study show that it would be beneficial to introduce a yearly examination of oral cavity for all population aged over 55; the aim of such examination should be early detection of changes not only in teeth and surrounding tissues but also in oral mucous membrane so that a proper treatment could be started in time.
