Abstract     Background: To present the frequency, clinical and histopathological features of conjunctival tumors operated at Eye hospital in Ljubljana over a 10-year period. Methods: A retrospective study of 111 patients with conjuctival tumors operated from June 1998 till June 2008. All samples were histopathologicaly verified. The age, gender, duration of patient history, location, size of lesion and histopathological diagnosis were recorded and clinical features were compared between benign and malignant tumors. Results: Median patient age was 35 years (range from 4 to 86 years), 63 (57 %) were female, 48 (43 %) were male. 68 (61 %) out of 111 patients had melanocytic tumors, 12 (11 %) patients had benign tumors of epithelium, 8 (7 %) had premalignant and malignant epithelial tumors, 4 (4 %) had vascular tumors, 4 (4 %) had lymphoid tumors, 1 (1 %) had myxoma, 1 (1 %) had dermoid, 13 (11 %) had non-neoplastic lesions. 15 (14 %) patients out of 111 had malignant conjuctival tumors and 96 (86 %) had benign tumors. Median age of patients with malignant tumors was significantly higher (70 years; range 30 do 86) then in patients with benign tumors (32.5 years; range 4 do 85). Median duration of history in patients with malignant tumors was significantly shorter (4 months, range 1 do 24) then in patients with benign tumors (24 months; range 1 do 660). Maximum diameter of malignant lesion was significantly larger (10 mm; range 3 do 20) then in benign tumors (5 mm; range 2 do 14). Conclusions:Tumors of the conjuctiva occupy a large spectrum of conditions. Most of them are benign. The most common are melanocitic tumors, second and third most common are benign and malignant epithelial tumors.
