Abstract     Hypoglycemia represents the most frequent side effect of insulin as well as of sulphonylurea preparations. Adequate education of the patient regarding diabetes, its treatment and complications is the most successful method for preventing hypoglycemia and/or decreasing the frequency of its occurence. While it is possible in most insulin-requiring cases to solve the hypoglycemia problem at the OPD by administering a 50 per cent glucose bolus injection, the patient with rather severe hypoglycemia receiving sulphonylurea preparations must be hospitalized, since such cases mostly require several days of 10 per cent glucose infusion. Apart from indigestion biguanides may cause reactions which are treated by replacing the drug by another, by gradually increasing the dose, and in hypersensitivity reaction to insulin desensitization may also be used. Acarbose merely causes indigestion, but in some cases it is so sever that the medication must be discontinued.
