Abstract     The mode of action of digitalis glycosides and their pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic characteristics are briefly described. Owing to their small therapeutic range, these drugs frequently produce side effects. The most frequent side effects are poor appetite, vomiting, various cardiac dysrrhythmias such as ectopic atrial or ventricular activity. Drugs which are often combined with digitalis glycosides cause interactions based primarily on a change in the concentration of serum digitalis glycosides. This occurs due to changes in digitalis pharmacokinetics, f.ex. verapamil and amiodaron decrease its renal clearance while kinidin increases absorption and at the same time decreases renal clearance and distribution volume. In some drugs, the exact cause for the mechanism producing the interaction is still unknown. Special attention must be paid to the possibility of interactions in combinations of drugs with similar side effects, f.ex. the complete A-V block with simultaneous applicaton of digoxin and verapamil. Good knowledge of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs is especially necessary when applying several drugs at the same time.
