Abstract     The definition of tension-type headache is based on clinical criteria, but integrating schemes including neurophysiological, psychological and biochemical aspects can help achieve insight into the disorder. Tension-type headache appears to be a central disinhibitory phenomenon, probably associated with neurotransmitter changes, autonomic dysfunction, underlying a typical personality structure, defective pain control and sensitivity to both myofascial and vascular input.
