Abstract     The prevalence of headache and migraine in primary school pupils in Ljubljana was investigated. A total of 905 children aged 7, 11 and 14 filled in a questionnaire on headache. 78 per cent of children have headaches: 68 per cent periodically and 19 per cent once to three times a month. Headache is more common in older children, and more common in girls than in boys of all age groups. According to the criteria of Vahlquist, 10.7 per cent of seven-year-old children, 15.5 per cent eleven-year-old children and 12.8 per cent, fourteen-year-old children had migraine and according to modified criteria of the International Headache Association, 1.7 per cent of seven-year-old, 3.7 per cent of eleven-year-old and fourteen-year-old children had migraine. 33.9 per cent of children report on severe headaches in their parents. As provoking factors, children most frequently mention disease, physical stress, physical fatigue and weather. In most children, headache is relieved by bed rest, while 33.8 per cent take an analgesic drug. 18.1 per cent children saw a physician. 65 per cent of children have never been absent from school due to headache.
