Abstract     Candida spp. yeasts represent part of the normal microbial flora of the skin and mucous membranes of the digestive and genital tracts. They are the most frequent causative agents of opportunistic yeast infection in humans. Diseases caused by Candida are known as candidosis or candidiasis. Oral candidosis is the most common yeast infection of the oral cavity. It occurs in acute and chronic forms. Its acute forms are pseudomembranuos candidosis and erythematous candidosis. Chronic oral candidosis, known as candidal leukoplakia, is manifested by hypertrophic lesions that appear as a consequence of epithelial hyperplasia. The presence of cellular dysplasia in chronic oral candidosis indicates that Candida has potential carcinogenic properties. Orallesions that are likely to be associated with chronic candidal infection are angular cheilitis, median rhomboid glossitis and denture stomatitis. The diagnosis of oral candidosis is based on medical history, clinical examination and laboratory tests (direct microscopic examination and culture of smears, semi-quantitative evaluation of yeast quantity and antimycotic resistance, histopathological examination). Treatment is initiated by topical application of polyenic antimycotic drugs. If these are ineffective, topical azolic agents or system ic antimycotics can be used. In some patients, an underlying condition must al so be treated.
