Abstract     According to the national statistics, consumption of alcoholic beverages in Slovenia in The eighties has exceeded 10 litres of pure alcohol per inhabitant early, which is considerably higher than the European average. The indicators of harmful use of alcohol also show that this problematics is ranging us into European peak itself. Especially the mortality due to alcoholic liver impairment has increased with us, and has almost trebled during the period 1975 -1985. Acute alcoholism was found in one quarter of drivers who caused traffic accidents on Slovenian roads in the years 1989 and 1990. Considering these and other available epidemiologic data the production, sale and consumption of alcohol, especially of distilled spirits have to he restricted. The plan of health care of the republic of Slovenia anticipates a 25 per cent reduction of average consumption of pure alcohol per inhabitant by the year 2000. This aim can be achieved only with a balanced economic and social-health policy on all the levels and all the domains.
