Abstract     Background. The aim of the study was to determine the climacteric symptoms rate in perimenopausal women and which symptoms are the most characteristic and intense. In the study on a representative sample of women aged 45-54 years in Slovenia the presence of climacteric complaints, age at menopause and the rate of perimenopausal women among them was evaluated. The respective rates of women with severe menopausal symptoms and of those at risk for osteoporosis were also estimated. Methods. The survey consisted of 930 randomly selected women from the population of women aged 45-54 years in Slovenia, the sample being stratified in urban and rural area. The study was conducted between spring and autumn 1990. The women who responded to our written invitation and voluntary confirmed their participation, were enrolled in the study. Altogether 585 women (62.9 per cent of representative sample) were interviewed by 23 gynaecologists from entire Slovenia. A questionnaire contained information on socio-demographic data, reproductive history, history of other diseases, life habits and perimenopausal symptoms. Statistical evaluation of the data was done using t-test and correlation coefficients were carried out where appropriate. Results. The mean age at menopause is 47.7 years. There is no correlation neither between the age at menopause and history of oral contraceptive use nor between the age at menopause and smoking habits. The most frequent climacteric symptoms are nervousness (64 per cent of women), sweating (61 per cent), hot flushes (55 per cent), anxiety (51 per cent) and headache (50 per cent).
