Abstract     This thesis forms a part of the body of research into the humoral autoimmune response, or more precisely the investigation into the significance of antibodies to own cell components. Some autoantibodies represent important information in the differential diagnosis, although the significance and the pathogenetic role of most of them is not known. Many times, this is a result of group determination of a "family" of antibodies. Hypothesis: The knowledge of fine specificity of autoantibodies is a prerequisite for higher yield of information from these antibodies on the disease and its course. The determination of individual types of autoantibodies within the "families" will enable a more succesful clinical management of patients, especially in the field of differential diagnosis. To confirm the hypothesis, two models were used in the dissertation: intracellular protein antigens (the ribonucleoprotein particles Ro) and nonprotein antigens of the cell membranes (phospholipids) and antibodies against them. The basic hypothesis therefore consists of two working hypotheses: a.) The anti-Ro antibodies, as determined by counter-immunoelectrophoresis, are a "family" of antibodies. It includes antibodies, which do not give much information on the course of a disease, and those which are directly related to the type of the disease (diagnosis or characteristic clinical features). The latter can be used as marker antibodies in the management of a patient more efficiently than "all" Ro antibodies together. b.) The antiphospholipid antibodies are a "family" of antibodies. As for the anti-Ro antibodies, we maintain that there also exist within the family of antiphospholipid antibodies, such antibodies which are more informative in a cerfain disease or a disorder than the whole family. The basic purpose of this work is to highlight some facts which will facilitate an easier understanding of the autoimmune recognition.(trunc.)
