Abstract     ln dental medicine, we of ten encounter diseases and treatment procedures that cause alterations in jaw bones. Bone tissue is constantly being formed and resorbed under the control of hormonal and mechanical factors. Bone modelling is a process that is observed during skeletal growth, whereas bone remodelling is essential for the maintenance of skeletal quality. Research on bone metabolism provides us with better understanding of disease processes in bones and open s up new treatment possibilities for these disorders. Distraction osteogenesis and orthodontic tooth movement are used as models for studying bone formation and resorption. Distraction osteogenesis is suitable for studying osteoblast activity. With the orthodontic tooth movement model, the number and activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, the percentage of alveolar bone surface covered with osteoblasts and osteoclasts, and the surface of trabecular bone can be evaluated. These models also allow us to study the action of drugs that can be used for treating disorders of bone metabolism.
