Abstract     13 years ago a paper From barotrauma to biotrauma was published by Tremblay and Slutsky. In this paper we try to analyze where we are today according to the studies and published papers. Definitive evidence that mechanical ventilation can cause damage to the lungs in humans is difficult to obtain, since it is clearly not possible to perform experiments in which humans are exposed to strategies of ventilation that are thought to be injurious.
