Abstract     Introduction: Stress is an important part of everyday life. It is multifaceted and can stimulate a person's activity. An excessive stress, especially on a prolonged basis can, however, result in physical and psychological morbidity. Puerperium is a period of great changes that can be very stressful for a couple. The purpose of the article is to determine the impact of stress on parents and children and the role of a midwife in the prevention and alleviation of a parenting stress. Methods: An integrated and critical review of literature was conducted in order to identify previous relevant studies on the topic by the year of publication. Discussion and conclusions: All human beings experience stress which can have both positive and negative ramifications. The so-called eustress is the optimal level of stress which motivates an individual and gives them energy to achieve goals, to thrive and enjoy life. If the stress does not get resolved by coping and adapting it can lead to many adverse health problems. The effects of stress depend also on the characteristics of the stressor, individual's personality and environment (support from social network). Midwives can play a crucial role in preventing the stress in the postnatal period which might negatively impact the parents as well as the child. They can provide the necessary information and counselling and thus alleviate the common stressor caused by fear and anxiety of accepting new social roles, parenthood responsibilities and demands.
