Abstract		Backgrouond. The authors present newer substances, and their pharmacological profiles, used in treatment of anxiety and insomnia. Modern biochemistry and molecular biology enable new insights into the mechanisms of action of neurotransmitters in the brain and in the perpheral tissues. The research in psychopharmacology is oriented toward production of more selective drugs with better clinical efficacy and fewer side effects. Conslusions. In this review article new, mostly nonbenzodiazepine anxiolytic and hypnotic drugs, from the point of their action on receptor mechanisms and pharmacological profile, are presented.
