| Abstract | In review paper epidemiological and etiopathogenetic data of insulin independent-type 2 diabetes and insulin dependent-type 1 diabetes are reported. Genetic and ecological factors which could influence the onset of autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells in type 1 diabetes are presented. The importance of evaluation of the stage of prediabetes measuring first phase insulin secretion of beta cells during intravenous glucose stimulation is emphasised as during this period the immune intervention with immunomodulators or immunosupressive drugs could prevenet or at least postpone the onset of insulin dependent diabetes melitus. | |
