Abstract     The effect of particular apo E phenotypes, LpP(a) and other lipoproteins on the development of dislipoproteinemia in type I diabetes was investigated. A cohort of 450 diabetic patients of both sexes aged 13-14 years and 450 normal age- and sex-metched school-children were examined. Both the diabetic and control groups were normolipidemic. The concentration of Lp(a) was significantly higher (p less th. 0.05) in diabetic children as compared to the control group. Diabetics with apo E3/3 phenotype were found to have higher concentrations of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and Lp(a) than non-diabetics with apo E3/3 phenotype. In case of apo E3/2 phenotype, the concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, LDL, apo AI and Lp(a) were higher in diabetic children than in the control group. Diabetic children were observed to have a greater proportion of high concentrations of Lp(a) lipoproteins. Results of this study suggested the and apo E4/3 phenotypes to contribute to the expression of dislipoproteinemia in children with type I diabetes.
