Abstract     Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae are the most important causative agents of invasive bacterial infections in the childhood period. They are the most frequent causes of bacteraemia and bacterial meningitis in children beyond the neonatal period and they are also important causative agents of other focal infections. The epidemiology of infections with these bacteria differs among geographic regions and epidemiologic data for Slovenia are still being collected. Knowledge of epidemiologic data of infections with these three bacteria is important for the planning of vaccinations with new vaccines, some of which are already on the market, while others are still in development. The authors present the epidemiology, clinical syndromes and new developments in therapy and prevention of infections with Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae.
