Abstract     In this article the authors present the problem of poisoning in children treated at the Department of Pediatrics in Ljubljana. A study was made of all cases of poisoning in children treated at the Department of Pediatrics in Ljubljana in the four year period from 1987 through 1990. Data on age and sex of the child, cause of the poisoning, type of agent involved and time of occurence were recorded retrospectively and analised by standard statistical methods. In this period, there were 635 cases of all types of poisoning. More than half of these (53 per cent) occured between the age of 1 and 5 years. There was no significant sex difference. Most poisonings were accidental. The dominant toxic agents were drugs (49 per cent), followed by poisonings due mushroom ingestion (13 per cent) and ingestion of alcohol (10 per cent). Most poisonings occured in the afternoon. All children survived without sequelae. Childhood poisoning is a significant problem which calls for better preventive measures.
