Abstract     Hirsutism, unusual acne, oligomenorrhoea, alopaecia and changes in bone maturation are among common manifestations of hyperandrogenism in adolescent girls. Clinical scoring of certain androgen dependent regions is used to assess the severity of androgen stimulation. Functional hyperandrogenic states, espccially ovarian, are the most frequent underlaying cause, but other differential diagnoses should be taken into consideration. The plasma free testosterone and its precursors in basal conditions and subsequently the pattern of their response to suppression and/or stimulation are helpful in determining the source of androgen excess. Treatment is chosen according to the source of androgens and the patient's symptoms and often includes specific dermatological and cosmetic approaches. Psyhological effects of clinical manifestations should be included in evaluation.
