Abstract     Unconventional-alternative methods of treatment are increasing around the world. It is estimated that 40 % of people are using methods which do not include any professional and tax control. The only unconventional method, which has been introduced into clinics and spas around the world, is acupuncture. In order to introduce unconventional methods into academic medicine, based on modern research methods, analysis of therapy and treatment outcomes, integrative medicine is being developed in Europe. In Europe, various academic research centers (Charite in Berlin, Germany, Karolinska in Stockholm, Sweeden) has been established. They include alternative methods in their treatment, enforce more scientific research in those methods and verify treatment outcomes. Acupuncture is, especially in psychosomatic diseases, the therapy of choice for stress situations; burn-out syndrome, endocrine diseases etc. However, the decision must be made by a physician, in order to exclude serious organic disease, and physicians must be educated both in school medicine as well as in non-conventional therapies. Integrative medicine combines both methods of treatment and it provides treatment programs with scientific and therapeutic quality.
