Abstract     Introduction: Media messages - images - about nurses help create public opinion about nurses' role in health care. What the public knows and believes about the function and effectiveness of nurses has an impact on providing the resources for further development of the nursing profession. The purpose of the present research was to identify the public image of nurses as it was depicted in the newspaper Delo in 2007. Methods: The newspaper articles were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The coding of data followed the afore selected themes, categories and sub-categories. Results: Results of the research indicate that the newspaper presented a relatively positive image of nurses. While the majority of newspaper articles concentrated on nurses' poor working conditions, low salaries and nursing shortage, the nurses were also described as competent, highly educated health professionals who are involved in modern nursing practice, health education and preventive health care. Discussion and Conclusions: The findings point to the need for further and more comparative research and the review of media coverage of the profession. News media are an important source of information about nurses and their work and can consequently enhance the promotion of nursing profession. Nurses themselves could improve their press image by more active involvement in media and by informing the public about various activities of nursing professionals, acting as autonomous experts and contributing to the overall quality of health care.
