Abstract     Hantaviruses infecting humans in Eurasia include the Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala viruses and the closely related Dobrava and Saaremaa viruses. These viruses are causative agents of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), which is recognised as a severe healthcare problem in several countries. Routine diagnosis of hantavirus infection relies on serology. We describe a novel instrument-readable, antigen-based, rapid test for detection of immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies present in the serum of patients with acute Puumala and Dobrava or Hantaan virus infections. The assays have been validated and evaluated using serum samples confirmed as hantavirus IgM negative, and sera of patients with acute infections of the various hantaviruses. Infections caused by all pathogenic hantaviruses are detected with high sensitivity (96.3-97.1%) and specificity (95.2-98.4%).
