Abstract     The treatment of deciduous teeth with deep carious lesions and a normal or reversibly inflamed pulp is based on the principle of preserving tooth vitality. Such a tooth can be treated by stepwise removal of carious dentine and indirect pulp capping or by pulpotomy. The treatment outcome depends on proper diagnosis of the status of the primary pulp, presence or absence of pulp exposure, tightness of seal, maintenance of sterility, cooperation of the patient, and choice of medicament. The most successful medicament that promotes pulp regeneration is mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). Formaldehyde-containing products are no longer used because of toxicity.
