Abstract     Ceramic or composite inlays and onlays can represent an alternative to direct composite and amalgam fillings in the posterior region. Their use is indicated in twoand more surface cavities. Inlay and onlay restorations allow more hard tooth tissues to be preserved, compared to full-crown restorations. The shape of the preparation depends on the relationship of occlusal contacts with teeth in the opposite jaw to the preparation margins, thickness of the remaining tooth wall, type of occlusion, shape of the proximal box, restorative material used, and tooth type (premolar, molar). Preparations for inlay and onlay do not have a retentive shape, the cavity walls diverge in the occlusal direction. The margins of the preparation are sharp, all inner line angles are rounded. Once the basic preparation is complete, immediate dentine sealing is performed using an adhesive system, usually covered with a layer of composite. The preparation is finished with polishing burs.
