Abstract | In congenital coxa vara, the femoral neck-shaft angle is extremely small. Therefore valgus osteotomy is usually performed in order to increase the neck-shalf angle, and thus reduce stress in the upper part of the femur. This work shows that valgus osteotomy can, in the long run, prove successful only if the femoral neck-shalf angle is increased to a size much greater than that in a normal healthy hip, as thereby maximal reduction of shear stress in the femoral neck can be achieved. The presented method for evaluating the distribution of stress in the femoral neck is readily applicable to the planning of surgical interventions in the hip. | |
