Abstract     The ionophore monensin has an inhibitory effect on substrate degradation and carbohydrate fermentation by anaerobic rumen fungi Neocallimastix frontalis strain REI and Neocallimastix patriciarcim strain Cx, but the sensitivity differs for both species of fungi at the same monensin concentration. The presence of methanogenic bactena Methanobrevibacter smithii protects rumen fungi against monensin action, especially in the case of N.patriciarum strain Cx. Beside acetic, formic and lactic acid, ethanol, hydrogen and C02, succinic acid was also produced in fermentation of carbohydrates by rumen fungi. In pure cultures of N.patriciarum Cx grown on glucose, about 6 per cent of used C atoms were detected in succinic acid.
