Abstract     Introduction: Workplace bullying is an important issue that is growing in significance. In Slovenia, nursing was the first occupational group that has made some important steps towards recognition, prevention and elimination of violence among and against its members. Recognition, transparency and in-depth studies are the main future challenges. The aim of the article is to present the key theoretical concepts and sociological research of workplace bullying in Slovenia and abroad. Methods: Literature review as a descriptive research method was used in the study. 31 out of 282 selected references are further analysed, 16 including basic definitions of bullying and 15 presenting useful and applicable research results. Discussion and conclusion: In defining workplace bullying, three main obstacles are encountered. There is no legal or official definition of bullying within the European Union; the subtle nature of workplace bullying makes it harder to be recognized within the temporal and environmental context - the behavior is covert. In addition, the same phenomena have been described differently, yielding no international comparison of the relevant research results. Some common points, however, can be discerned. Bullying is about violence but a single violent act cannot be marked as bullying.
Summary     Izhodišča: Trpinčenje na delovnem mestu je pojav, ki zdravstvene nege ni zaobšel. Ta poklicna dejavnost je bila v Sloveniji prva, ki je storila pomembne korake za prepoznavanje, preprečevanje in odpravo nasilja med svojimi zaposlenimi in nad njimi. Prizadevanje, da pojav postane še bolj prepoznaven, viden ter raziskan, je glavni izziv za prihodnost. Namen članka je predstaviti glavne teoretske koncepte in raziskave tega pojava v Sloveniji in v tujini. Metode: Uporabljena je bila opisna raziskovalna metoda, pregled literature. Od 282 izbranih virov je podrobneje analiziranih 16 takšnih, ki prinašajo pomembnejše definicije pojava trpinčenja na delovnem mestu in 15 takšnih, ki predstavljajo rezultate raziskav tega pojava. Razprava in zaključki: Ko želimo pojav opredeliti, naletimo na tri glavne ovire: prvič, na odsotnost enotne zakonske definicije na področju Evropske unije; drugič, ker je pojav po naravi subtilen in ga niti žrtev niti delovna ali socialna okolica običajno ne opazujejo skozi časovno dimenzijo in kontekst, ga je težje prepoznati in tretjič, za opis istega pojava poznamo veliko različnih poimenovanj. Zaradi teh ovir je skorajda nemogoča mednarodna primerljivost raziskav. Pri različnih definicijah in teoretskih pristopih lahko najdemo nekaj stičnih točk: prvič, gre za nasilje; drugič, enkratno nasilno dejanje še ni trpinčenje; tretjič, ključni element je moč oziroma njena zloraba in četrtič, pojav žrtvam povzroča škodo.
