Abstract     A total of 121 women with mastodynia and clinical manifestations of fibrocystic breast disease were included in the prospective double-blind study and classified at random into five groups: those taking gestagens (dydrogesterone or norethysterone acetate), tocopherol or placebo and women of the control group. Both gestagens were statistically significantly more successful in the suppression of symptoms than tocopherol (p less th. 0.05) or their spontaneous disappearance in the control group (p less th. 0.001). The effectiveness of placebo was very high in companson to the control group (p less th. 0.001). Its effectiveness did not differ statistically significantly from the effectiveness of gestagens, which speaks for a possible notable influence of the psychoneurotic component on the development of symptoms and signs of mastodynia.
