Abstract     The project 'Birds of the Ljubljana city and surroundings' was executed during a 18 month period, from 2009 to 2011. During the project we performed a systematic survey of all of the birds in the broader area of the Ljubljana during the winter as well as during the breeding period. Study site in size of 211,1 km2 was divided to 69 survey polygons. In each of the polygon we performed two counts of the birds in breeding and two counts of the birds in winter season. During each counting session we used two methods: a transect and area count method (for parts of the polygon which were not sufficiently covered with the transect). Total length of all transects was 128,4 km. We also collected randomly acquired data, but in analyses we only use them for species that were not recorded with other methods. We confirmed presence of 161 bird species. Among them we found 104 possible or confirmed breeders and 97 wintering species. In first part of the report a study site as a whole is presented and the survey and analyses methods are explained. In the second part each survey polygon is presented with a map, a location of transect, a proportion of different habitat types and the quantitative list of the species recorded in both seasons. In the third part all bird species are presented with a distribution map and population size estimation (common species) or with all recorded data (rare species). In last part a short analyses of bird communities is presented as well as a comparison of our results with results of bird surveys from some other European cities.
