Abstract     The article deals with some recent methodological approaches in the field of psychoanalysis, which shed different lights on the question of the self-image, but which when integrated suggest a slightly different, more complementary vision of this phenomenon. Klein and Mahler are studying the development of self-image by means of the retrospective method, presupposing that the formation of self-image is influenced chiefly by developmental mechanisms of splitting, projective identification etc., as well as by the processes of differentation and individuation. On the contrary, Stern uses the so called "prospective method" and sees the basic factors of self-image development as different perceptions of onself.
