Abstract     The authors have evaluated the effects of an oral health education programme offered to expectant mothers on the status of oral health and the prevalence of factors promoting malocclusion problems in their children. The study group included 83 children born to mothers who attended a preventive course during pregnancy and successfully completed the test. The control group comprised a random sample of 61 children born to mothers who were not enrolled in the preventive programme. The study group exhibited a significantly lower prevalence of carious teeth (p less th. 0.00) and plaque deposits (p less th. 0,001), and a significantly higher proportion of children without a sucking habit (p less th. 0,05). Compared to the control group, an insignificantly greater proportion of children in the study group regularly brushed their teeth and received fluoride treatment. The lips apart habit and improper swallowing were common in both groups. Parents should be informed of all available measures for the prevention of dental caries and malocclusion in their child, to be applied in the antenatal period, at birth and throughout the period of development and growth.
