Abstract     A sample of 150 children (72 girls and 78 boys average age 7,5 years) attending the first grade of elementary schools in Ljubljana has been examined in an attempt to determine how the reduction in dental carries, observed over the past 14 years, is reflected in the condition of support zones among children living in Ljubljana. The status of first permanent molars and teeth of the support zone were evaluated. The length of support zones was measured using a calliper (Dentaurum 042 751). Support zones were classified as intact or collapsed. The average number of collapsed support zones per child was 1,01 for boys and 1,33 for girls. The corresponding figures obtained by other authors in the same region in 1971 were 1,88 and 2,12, respectively. The comparison shows a significant decline in the number of collapsed support zones for both sexes (p less th. 0,001). The average proportion of prematurely lost teeth in a support zone was 2,71 per cent in the present survey compared to 4,93 per cent observed by other authors who studied the same age group of children in Ljubljana in 1980. Again, the differences are significant for both sexes. Reductions in the length of support zones due ro caries and premature loss of primary teeth is a common cause of dysgnathias. It is therefore essential to preserve the teeth of a support zone nad to restore carefully the original mesiodistal width of primary molars when applying fillings to these teeth.
