| Abstract | This review article deals with the composition and role of gingival fluid in periodontal disease. Cellular elements, electrolytes, organic components, metabolic and bacterial products, indicators of the cellular and humoural host response, enzymes and indicators of acute inflammation present in gingival fluid are described. Methods for obtaining gingival fluid samples are presented. The role of different components in early detection of periodontal disease activity and evaluation of its progression is described. | |
